What are the Benefits of Paving?
Paving compliments, highlights and adds to the atmosphere of your home. Think of an outdoor entertaining area, sandstone colored paving creates a calming atmosphere against a green garden bed. Or a bluestone path meandering to a outdoor garden chair set against a flower or fern garden.
Paving provides a safe level surface for your and your guests, and of course means dust and dirt are not walked into your home.Stone paving is durable. Unlike wood decks, which need to be re-stained, and rebuilt, stone paving is durable and built to last.
The main difference between a concrete slab and paving is that paving is made up of many individual pieces as opposed to one poured slab. This allows for contraction and expansion meaning less surface cracks. Also, if you need access for any reason, a small area can be lifted and replaced.
What type of pavers should I choose?
There is a huge variety of pavering colors, shapes, sizes, and textures to choose from.
Colors are selected to contrast and compliment the environment. We take into account the color of your house, fencing and yard. The recommended size and shape depends on the style of your home. Larger pavers can make a small space look bigger, while the irregular shape of crazy paving gives a natural look. If your paving is cost sensitive, smaller pavers are generally cheaper per square meter. Over larger areas like driveways this can be a significant saving.
Pavers are generally made from clay or concrete. Natural clay is fired in a high temperature kiln, giving a highly durable paver. They have a vibrant natural color and usually have a smooth finish. Concrete pavers, are made from sand and cement, are a cheaper option. Also highly durable concrete pavers have softer colours, and come in a greater variety of different sizes and shapes.

What paving patterns will look good? What is Crazy Paving?
There are several common paving patterns, the most popular being stretcher bond, herringbone, basket weave and crazy pave. Crazy paving is a puzzle of stones designed to create a special touch to the standard paving.
Consider the "header" or border for the paving. A popular finishing effect is to line a curve (cut with a masonry saw), with smaller pavers. They can be the same or a contrasting color.
Other materials can really add to the effect. Try sandstone colored pavers with synthetic lawn strips, or mondo grasses. For a contemporary look perhaps smooth grey/white pebbles and dark glossy pavers.
Examples of common garden and driveway paving patterns are shown on our paving patterns page.
Will Driveway Paving Crack or Shift?
Pavers for driveways should be a minimum of 50mm thick to handle vehicles. Paving laid over poorly compacted fill will always settle, causing cracks and puddles. We prepare a thick compacted layer of road base (crushed rock) to ensure pavers do not crack or chip with heavy vehicles. Concrete edges and appropriate grouting means the pavers will not shift. Our driveway paving is designed to withstand the wear and tear of modern vehicles.
What about drainage and tree roots?
If we find any plumbing or root problems when constructing your driveway or garden paving, we will install new plumbing or replace broken pipes at an additional cost. Because we prepare a solid foundation for the paving. the re-graded area has the desired drainage and flow.
